NEW DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS SONG, TOUR DATES, ALBUM ART, DOCUMENTARY

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!
When most bands make an announcement, they simply do that: they make AN announcement, but not the Drive-by Truckers. No, when you get some DBT news, you get all kinds of cool shit in your inbox.
Today the Truckers released “This Fucking Job” the first song off their upcoming album “The Big To-Do,” they unveiled the cover art by the always brilliant Wes Freed, they announced tour dates, and released more screening dates for the documentary on the band “The Secret to a Happy Ending.” That’s more than most indie shitheads do in a career, and it was just another Tuesday for the Truckers.
First the song, listen to it yourself. I could go on about it for pages, but it still wouldn’t tell you as much as those first few chords. It’s huge. No one’s made rock n roll this big for years. Turn it up– you don’t have it loud enough. That better? Good.
No one can combine balls to the wall rock n roll and socially relevant lyrics like DBT. “This Fucking Job” is visceral and gut wrenching, yet you can’t help but groove on it and bob your head, while also pumping your fist, pointing, and shouting along. That’s a lot of different reactions to one song, and it’s fucking rare. No one else is doing that. For most other bands to write such a universal song, it would have to be about heartbreak or fucking, but not the Truckers—they can capture the shitty, soul crushing suffocation and entrapment of underemployment and make you dance at the same time.
While the lyrics serve as a haunting reminder of just how shitty life can be, the song has hope– not just in the soaring lift of the chorus, but in the commonality of the message. Patterson and the Truckers hit almost oxymoronic levels of contradiction with tracks like this that are as unique as they are universal. When no one else is making music like you, you wouldn’t expect it to connect with the every man, but in fact it does, on a guttural, instinctive level, and far more so than some dumbed down piece of shit about how awesome Will.i.am can a party. Sometimes the highest common denominator is more common than the lowest.
Oh yeah, I was just going to let you listen to it and not rant on. Whatever, it’s the Truckers—I can’t help it. The album, “the Big To-Do” is out March 16th on ATO records. As usual, Wes Freed did the album art, which you see above. Wes is amazing. No one else shines such a bright light on the Southern underbelly on canvas (or plywood). It’s as if that guy in Munch’s “Scream” had gone to a party instead of having a panic attack. His work is absolutely haunting and beautiful. Go check it out and buy something on his page.

If I had to guess, I’d bet more dates and locations will be popping up for both.
You’re a fucking genius, Grumbinel.
And ‘Grumbinel’ is your Hobbit name.
Last February (2009) the band had to (unfortunately) cancel a gig at Turner Hall in Milwaukee, WI due to Patterson’s illness. I know other canceled dates were rescheduled as time allowed, but sadly Milwaukee wasn’t one of the cities that the band made it back to.
Now DBT have released new tour dates for 2010, and they’re going all around Milwaukee (Chicage, Detroit, Cleveland, et. al.) but will skip us entirely this time around?!
I’m not going to lie…this really hurts.
I felt bad for Patterson when he was ill, and I understood when the band could not re-schedule here…but to pass us up again seems a bit cold. There are PLENTY of viable venues in Milwaukee (Turner Hall, Riverside Theater, Pabst Theater, The Rave, Shank Hall).
Just wanted to share my thoughts, in case anyone cares.
Thanks,
Bryan
Hey Bryan, I feel for you. That sucks. It really does. Someone needs to mention that to the guys. JPW? Tell them to get their asses to Milwaukee.
Tickets to shows, gas and hotel, plus too many beers there really adds up.
Thanks Peter…I certainly don’t mean to come off as a whiney bitch, because that simply wouldn’t be fitting for a DBT fan.
Nonetheless, I appreciate that you can feel my pain.
I know I can catch them in Chicago (probably will in fact…just as I did last tour with Hold Steady at The Riviera), but there’s just something about having them come to your town, you know?
Actually, I’d prefer if they waited until summer and came to Summerfest along Milwaukee’s lakefront. That would be ideal!
Not whiney at all. Everybody needs the Truckers in their town. Now Summerfest does sound like it would be badass.
Hey Bryan,
This is just the first leg of the tour. The band doesn’t schedule or route their tours, the ‘man’ does based on biz deals, timing, availability, etc, so they pretty much go where they are told. I feel your pain in Mil, but, I’m sure they are going get to your neck of the woods sometime this year. You guys make PBR, right? Keep your fingers crossed for Summerfest.
Thanks for hanging in there and being a fan!
JPW
The tour date page no longer shows a Wilmington NC show. I know there was a mention of a venue change. Did that get worked out or are we SOL down here on the coast? Last time we saw you guys down here was the show on the parking deck [that ought to give everyone an idea of what great venues we have down here, LOL].
Hi Vick,
They are reworking the date for this show due to some scheduling issues. Hang tight and keep an eye on the DBT’s tour dates page and we’ll let you know when the Wilmington show is back on. Thnx!
JPW
Hi Vick: The Wilmington show is back on. Check tourdates page http://www.drivebytruckers.com
